Apparently, it’s easy to get fat

I’ve only been out of the triathlon game for a few weeks, but the weight gain has been remarkable. I actually stopped nearly all of my training in late September since I was in the midst of that five-races-in-five-weeks stretch and wanted to use the mid-week periods to rest and recover. As I look back, it appears as if I interpreted the words “rest and recover” to mean “eat with reckless abandon”.
I can’t imagine what the scale will read, and I’m in no rush to find out. I’m guessing that I’m +10 pounds… at least. It’s rather disgusting frankly, and looking in the mirror is just the kick I need to get back on the horse. With the beginning of Ironman training right around the corner, I’m actually trying to be patient and not start too hard-core too soon. Again though, it seems as if I’m taking the concept of enjoying a little break to extreme ends. No food is taboo for me at this point, nor is the quantity therein. My clothes fit differently and I’m even embarrassed to walk around in front of my fiancee with the shirt off. Come mid to late November, I’ll be working my butt off in the pool, on the trainer, and in Central Park.
In the interim, I have wedding planning and apartment renovation issues to keep me busy. The former is coming along nicely while the latter, though seemingly well-planned at this point, won’t truly allow us to rest easy until it’s done and she’s moved in. It’s a pretty exciting time for the two of us, and seemingly, to our families and close friends.
Despite the addition of body mass, I’m still playing on two football teams, a soccer team, and occasionally as a sub on a softball team. Surprisingly, I’m playing better this season than I perceive in the past. Some teammates have surmised that the engaged GG seems better grounded and more effective. There could be some truth to that, but I think the greater cause is the innate terror of turning 40. I keep trying to swim, bike, and run faster away from old age, but it now appears that I’m successfully chasing the end of my fourth decade. That’s one success I’d like to put off.
